Transportation in Kitsap County:
Utilizing Existing Train Infrastructure

As a candidate for Kitsap County Commissioner, I am committed to addressing the critical transportation issues facing our community. One of the most pressing concerns is the traffic congestion along Highway 3, particularly through the Gorst corridor. To tackle this problem, I propose an innovative and cost-effective solution: leveraging existing train infrastructure to provide a reliable transportation alternative for commuters.

The Problem

Highway 3, especially the stretch through Gorst, is notorious for heavy traffic, causing significant delays for residents and workers traveling to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) and Submarine Base Bangor. This congestion not only impacts daily commutes but also affects the overall quality of life and economic productivity in Kitsap County. With the county's population continuing to grow, addressing this issue is more critical than ever.

Our Proposal
To alleviate traffic congestion and provide a sustainable transportation solution, I propose working with State and Federal governments to utilize the existing train tracks from Gorst to PSNS and Subbase Bangor. This project includes several key components:
-
Establishing a Train Service: By utilizing the existing train tracks, we can introduce a commuter train service that runs from Gorst to PSNS and Subbase Bangor. This service will provide a reliable and efficient transportation alternative for workers, reducing the number of vehicles on Highway 3 and easing traffic congestion.
-
Creating a Park and Ride Lot and Train Station in Gorst: A new Park and Ride lot and train station will be established in Gorst, potentially at Otto Jarstad Park. This location is strategically chosen to serve as a convenient access point for commuters. The Park and Ride lot will provide ample parking space for those who drive to the station, encouraging the use of the train service.
-
Implementing Security Measures: To ensure the security of our military installations, the train station will be manned by the Department of Defense. This will include handling Pass and ID verification, making the train service a direct link for base employees and servicemembers.
Benefits of the Proposal
This proposal offers numerous benefits for Kitsap County and its residents:
-
Cost-Effective Solution: By utilizing existing train infrastructure, the project can be implemented at a fraction of the cost of building new roads or expanding current highways. This makes it a financially prudent solution for taxpayers.
-
Reduced Traffic Congestion: Introducing a commuter train service will significantly reduce the number of vehicles on Highway 3, particularly through the congested Gorst stretch. This will result in shorter commute times and less frustration for drivers.
-
Environmental Impact: Reducing the number of vehicles on the road will also decrease emissions and contribute to a cleaner environment. Promoting public transportation aligns with our commitment to sustainability and protecting Kitsap County’s natural beauty.
Conclusion
Addressing the transportation challenges in Kitsap County requires innovative and practical solutions. By leveraging existing train infrastructure, we can provide a cost-effective and efficient alternative to alleviate traffic congestion along Highway 3. This proposal not only enhances our transportation system but also promotes environmental sustainability and economic growth.
As your County Commissioner, I am dedicated to making this vision a reality. Together, we can build a more connected and efficient Kitsap County, where residents enjoy improved quality of life and greater opportunities for success.
Thank you for your support, and I look forward to serving you as Kitsap County Commissioner.
