Tackling the Fentanyl Crisis in Kitsap County:
A Bold New Approach

As a candidate for Kitsap County Commissioner, I am committed to addressing the pressing issues that affect our community's safety and well-being. One of the most urgent challenges we face is the proliferation of fentanyl, a deadly synthetic opioid that has wreaked havoc on our streets and devastated countless lives. To combat this crisis, I propose a partnership with the Kitsap County Sheriff and Crime Stoppers to put a $500 bounty on fentanyl dealers, making it too difficult and expensive for them to operate in our county. This initiative will be coupled with increased efforts to help addicts and the mentally ill recover and reintegrate into society.

The Fentanyl Crisis in Kitsap County

Fentanyl has become a significant public health crisis in Kitsap County. According to the Kitsap Public Health District, there were 55 opioid-related overdose deaths in the county in 2022, with fentanyl being a major contributor to this alarming statistic. The potency of fentanyl, which is up to 100 times stronger than morphine, makes it particularly dangerous and often lethal even in small amounts.

Our Plan to Combat Fentanyl Dealers

To address this crisis, I propose a multi-faceted approach focused on aggressively targeting fentanyl dealers while providing comprehensive support for those struggling with addiction. Here’s how we plan to achieve this:

  1. $500 Bounty on Fentanyl Dealers: By partnering with the Kitsap County Sheriff and Crime Stoppers, we will establish a $500 bounty for information leading to the arrest and conviction of fentanyl dealers. This bounty program will incentivize community members to report illegal activities and help law enforcement identify and apprehend those responsible for distributing this deadly drug.

  2. Increased Law Enforcement Resources: Allocating additional resources to the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office will ensure that our law enforcement officers have the tools and support they need to effectively target and dismantle fentanyl distribution networks.

  3. Support for Addicts and the Mentally Ill: While we focus on eliminating dealers, we must also provide robust support for individuals struggling with addiction and mental health issues. Expanding access to treatment programs, mental health services, and rehabilitation facilities will help these individuals recover and lead healthier, more productive lives. According to the Kitsap County Behavioral Health and Recovery Division, there are over 2,000 residents currently seeking treatment for substance use disorders, highlighting the urgent need for expanded services.

  4. Community Education and Prevention Programs: Preventing drug abuse before it starts is critical. We will invest in community education programs that raise awareness about the dangers of fentanyl, promote healthy lifestyles, and provide resources for families affected by addiction. School-based initiatives and public awareness campaigns will play a crucial role in these efforts.

The Impact of Our Initiative

Implementing this comprehensive strategy will have several positive outcomes for Kitsap County:

  • Reduction in Drug-Related Crime: By making it too risky and expensive for dealers to operate, we will see a significant decrease in drug-related crimes, improving overall community safety.

  • Lives Saved: Aggressively targeting dealers and providing support for addicts will help reduce the number of overdose deaths, saving lives and giving individuals a chance to recover.

  • Healthier Communities: Supporting addicts and the mentally ill in their recovery will lead to healthier, more stable communities where individuals can contribute positively to society.

  • Enhanced Community Trust: A successful bounty program and visible law enforcement efforts will foster greater trust between residents and law enforcement, encouraging more community cooperation and engagement.

Conclusion

The fentanyl crisis in Kitsap County requires decisive and innovative action. By partnering with the Kitsap County Sheriff and Crime Stoppers to implement a $500 bounty on fentanyl dealers, we can disrupt the drug trade and create safer, healthier communities. At the same time, we must provide comprehensive support for those battling addiction and mental illness, ensuring they have the resources they need to recover. Together, we can make Kitsap County a safer place for all residents.

Thank you for your support, and I look forward to serving you as Kitsap County Commissioner.
